Power pop/indie rock band Linda Brady Revival has released a moving, fierce seven-minute-long power-pop anthem, “The Barkers.”Rife with societal critiques, the song opens with Linda’s sincere and warm voice, laid over a relaxing yet reinvigorating guitar strum. As the song progresses, the drums enter, bringing a slow, steady momentum while the guitars grow more gritty and fuzzy. The track builds to a refreshing climax with bustling drums and churning guitars stirring a frenzy before eventually leaving the singer’s voice in the lone as it fades out.
“The Barkers” reflects on modern societal issues and unveils the hypocrisies and contradictions in religion and cultural authority. The lyrics are visually stimulating as buzzards, fire-eaters, and all else are used to critique self-righteousness, censorship, and the loss of individual identity. The closing line, “Please do be wise / To the father of lies,” helps us cognize how dangerous blind allegiance and deceit can be.
Brady felt it necessary to let the track breathe and unfold naturally for a whole of 7 minutes so that she could fully convey the emotional and thematic weight of the song. For that, the lyrics are just the right level of dystopian to really capture the feel of our world and relay an urgent message through timeless musicality.
From their album Deep Brain Stimulator, “The Barkers” transmits the band’s urgency to speak up. Diagnosed with early-onset Parkinson’s, Brady channels her personal struggles into her music and produces a body of work that is both deeply personal and socially conscious.
