Spring has arrived, and Lorde is back at the beach to premiere another Solar Power music video. The music video for “Secrets From a Girl (Who’s Seen It All),” directed by Joel Kefali and Ella Yelich-O’Connor (AKA the singer herself), was released on March 22 and includes three different incarnations of Lorde — literally and figuratively.
Lorde begins the video by waking up on the beach, clothed in a red crop top and fitted slacks with her hair in an updo. She soon encounters our second Lorde, who is dressed in a cream-colored top with puff sleeves and a matching flared skirt, with loose hair and a vampy pout, and who is dressed in a cream-colored top with puff sleeves and a matching flared skirt. Lorde Number Three arrives shortly after, dressed in a textured shirt with a sunflower motif, printed leggings, and a straw hat. And there’s a reason why the ‘fits appear so familiar.
Lorde (or should we say Lordes?) can be seen harmonizing with herself, jumping rope, dancing, and acting as her own shoulder to rest on while contemplating about the song, which was released on August 20, 2021.
Fans are already dissecting the music video and studying the references, as they do with any Lorde release. As amusing as it may appear, Lorde’s self-references throughout the video have significance; many believe that each of the Lordes shown in the video represents a different era in the singer’s career.
Melodrama Lorde, according to fans, is the first Lorde in red. Lorde Number Two is thought to be Pure Heroine Lorde, whereas Lorde Number Three could reflect her current era, as she uses Solar Power.
“Understanding this situation is very sad: pure heroism and melodrama, relying on Solar Power since she is the mother, the maturity, and the light after the darkness.” Thank you, Lorde,” a fan said in Spanish as he shared a clip from the music video.
Lorde also gave fans a sneak glance at the video’s concept via her popular newsletter, revealing that the three characters are known as The Child, The Lover, and The Gardener.
According to Rolling Stone India, Lorde stated to fans via her email that “this song is me in touch with another version of myself, attempting to send along the wisdom I’ve started to collect along the journey.” “As we were plotting the video, Joel mentioned some old film/TV tropes concerning female groupings. It prompted me to consider three unique aspects of myself and picture what would happen if they could come together… The Child, in purple lipstick and silver jewelry, large hair put to one side, jumping and bouncing like I did as a six-year-old; The Lover, a baby woman in red with a small diamanté eye, waking up hungover and divine; and The Gardener, myself at most smartest and most knowledgeable.
Lorde also revealed on her Spotify “Storyline” that the song’s lyrics are “a message from her future self to her younger self that everything’s going to be OK,” according to Billboard. The song “Secrets From a Girl (Who’s Seen It All)” is a clear reference to her 2013 song “Ribs,” according to the artist.
