SAD PUNK has his own cartoonish stories unveiled in rap and hip-hop through his EP, The Pilot.
The opening track, “Theme (from “The SAD PUNK Show”),” sets the stage perfectly with theatrical and suspenseful swelling music and tapping beat building up the mood. On the other hand, vintage voiceovers act like a comedic backing vocal to SAD PUNK welcomes you to the “Sad Punk Show” with smugness.
“Liar or a Hypocrite” takes a sharp turn with a brooding but catchy soundscape. He portrays a childhood scarred by abuse. From what I understand, the question in the chorus, “Are you a liar or a hypocrite?” is a haunting reflection of the trauma that lingers long after escape.
Then SAD PUNK brings the real comedic effect with “Gravy.” A dramatic retro TV-style intro heralds the “ancient power” of fire, water and…gravy. The track, then, races out into a frenzy of record scratches, sharp beats, and suspenseful music, while the artist raps energetically and smugly all for gravy.
SAD PUNK gets really reflective and realistic in “Where Did The Time Go.” Here, he grapples with the feeling of being stuck, of time slipping away while success remains elusive. He repeats, “I am not where I am supposed to be,” which shows that he knows what he wants, at least.
The soothing outro “Ending Theme (from “The SAD PUNK show”),” displays shimmering guitar work and the sound of crashing waves like the coming down of a thrilling high, like that of The Pilot.
