Occurrence is back with a 4-track EP, “The Remote Past Tense,” after releasing amazing music year after year, just keeping us entertained with their consistent excellence and increasing their presence in the industry.
Released on the 28th of March, 2023, The Remote Past Tense begins with the track of the same name, which it’s more of a soulful ballad with vocalist Cat Hollyer’s soprano vocals. She starts singing in a tender and evocative manner over classical instrumentals to effectuate emotive energy in the song. With each note, her melancholy is seen to rise with her voice as it soars and belts to get even more sonorous by the turn. Then, you hear the synthesizers finally start building, crashing, and thumping in layers underneath her mesmerizing range.
The introductory track definitely steals the show, but that’s why the rest of the tracks are composed so much differently, none resembling the other in kind or style. “The Universe Moves so Fast” is a vaporous piece with Johnny Hager’s voice lulling like a siren over hard, gritty synths. Meanwhile, the third track, “Fudge,” is almost femme fatale, with Cat slowly but seductively turning up a slow burn with her voice over glitzy synthesized music. It’s almost like hearing a mysterious woman sing from a damaged old TV.
“Heels over Head” will take you by surprise. A country and folky romantic sound is the last thing you would expect from this EP. But Occurence definitely loves the spontaneity of uncertainty. And that’s why we love them! You need to listen to this EP if you love being thrown off track—in a good way, of course.
