Phoenix-based composer and painter Allan Jamisen continues to blur the lines between jazz lounge, cinematic electronica, and spoken-word poetry with his hypnotic new single โThis Is Not An Act.โ Known for crafting immersive soundscapes that feel more like late-night monologues than traditional songs, Jamisen digs deep into themes of authenticity, mortality, and self-reckoning here. The track plays out like an inner conversation with a higher self, where the past lingers but the urge to rise above it refuses to fade.
Right off the bat, โThis Is Not An Actโ slips into motion with brooding, bass-heavy beats that thump through a smoky groove. A deep bassline hums underneath while Jamisen delivers his lines in a gravelly, almost smug spoken cadence. โBut hey, I am ready today to meet my makerโฆso come and take me away,โ he declares, sounding calm but defiant. It hooks you instantly, as the air feels thick with stories waiting to unfold.
Soon enough, the soundscape begins to bloom. Horns slide into the mix, warm and expressive, while distant female harmonies rise and fade like ghostly echoes. Their soulful wails add a haunting dimension, especially as Jamisen repeats the hypnotic refrain: โThis is not an actโฆ I have got to be that much better.โ Thereโs a tension in those lines, like someone wrestling with the weight of their past but refusing to stay stuck in it.
Then things get even more intriguing. A flute curls and writhes through the background, bending notes with a sly mystery. Saxophone flourishes glide through the arrangement while starry electronic textures shimmer overhead. Bit by bit, the track builds into an intoxicating fusion of smoky brass, trip-hop-leaning rhythms, and cinematic ambience. By the time it fades out, โThis Is Not An Actโ feels less like a song and more like a moody, mesmerizing, and metamorphic midnight reckoning.
