Opening a song with the line, โMy old man was a son of a bitch,โ is one hell of a way to start a song. Itโs quite something. It definitely made me almost gasp, do a retake, then giggle when you hear it, because itโs not what you ever expect to hear from any song. In fact, not a song called โThree Words,โ for I think we all have a common thought in our heads when we hear those special three words. This song gives you what you want, but very differently, in the most intriguing way.
Prem Byrne, the independent singer-songwriter from Woodacre, CA, brings you heartfelt messages and childhood trauma through witty, relatable, and touching lyrics like that. It gets real enough but stays simple musically with glistening, soft, slow guitars strumming. Then that tap comes, paced steady and far enough to give you space to keep up with the song. Itโs engaging and relaxing. You will surely not feel like you are trauma-dumped upon, but think more like, โhey, thatโs an interesting take and a different story.โ
We all know Americana is amazing when it comes to storytelling, and he takes that characteristic to a more intimate category quite fluently. The story just spills out, as do the emotions. You hear the unresolved feelings and desires from a conflicted son who canโt go back to yesterday as much as he would love to. But what really matters is how he is empathizing with his father and, in his heart, is finally willing to understand his father, which is enough to come to terms with the past and let your heart be at peace.
โThree Wordsโ by Prem Byrne is available on Spotify, Apple Music, and other platforms. So check it out if you love artists like Tracy Chapman and Coldplay.
