Maryland singer-songwriter David Scott Weaver taps into the love 60-year love story of a Maryland couple, Jacob and Doris Bender, in his heartfelt single, โTwo.โ Hailing from Silver Spring, Weaver teams up with legendary bluegrass songwriter Louisa Branscomb, best known for Alison Kraussโs classic โSteel Rails.โ Recorded at Gizmo Recording Studio with Gantt Kushner behind the boards, who also contributes lead guitar and bass, โTwoโ brings together a tight group of collaborators, including drummer Chris Curro and harmony vocalist Lynn Hollyfield, giving the song a warm, organic feel.
โTwoโ opens with the crystalline sparkle of glistening guitars, strumming away its acoustic chords. The drums follow, thumping up the momentum and the joy. They open up a jolly, charming, soothing atmosphere that sets the stage for the song to ride along its loving journey.
Weaver comes along as the anchor of the journey, as he tells it with the energy of a storyteller, as catchy as it is sincere. He opens it sincerely, โTwo days, two minutes, two rooms apart, for 60 years, he loved her right from the start,โ with the consistent devotion of an ardent lover, perfectly captured in its steadfastness, at first listen, that gives you the premise of the passion of the character.
As Weaver continues, we can hear the echo at the end of his lines. Thereโs the voice of Hollyfield accompanying him, giving his storytelling just a little oomph that lifts โTwoโ just enough. The story ensues, building up line by line with just the right pace as well. He sings, โ1950, serving his country, so far from home.โ As it goes, he sings about a woman he met and danced with. Turns out, they never stopped dancing with each other since.
Unfortunately, their 60-year marriage ended just days apart during the COVID-19 pandemic. Rather than dwelling solely on the tragedy of the matter, Weaver frames their story as a testament to enduring devotion, that reflects the strength of the lifelong love, that was in their longing hearts as they strived for their breaths in isolation. It was the fact that they were together in spirit, even if not in proximity.
