NYC duo The Heroic Enthusiasts, consisting of James Tabbi and Thomas Ferrara, returns with their second single, “Wake Me When It’s Over,” co-written and produced by the legendary Stephen Hague. The track, released ahead of their upcoming album Illuminate (due 2025), gets behind Brit-pop, New Wave, and Post-Punk influences.
“Wake Me When It’s Over” opens with a moody, brooding tone. The drums beat rhythmically, creating a sense of tension, while the guitars rev with a cool smugness. The delivery becomes emotive and anguished as he sings. Midway, the music fills up with theatrical swagger as the guitars churn with smugness and coolness and churn and rev with gnarl, while the electronic glinting features shimmer and bling.
Lyrically, “Wake Me When It’s Over” reflects on the cyclical nature of life and relationships, with lines like “Everything repeats” and “We could build it up or we can tear it all down” underscoring the theme of existential ennui. The chorus, “Wake me when it’s over, if anything has changed,” feels like a resigned sigh in the face of repetition, punctuated by moments of emotional vulnerability.
The second track, “All I Want,” offers a shift in tone, bringing a sultry, groovy vibe. The percussion is tight and bustling, while the shimmering melodies let you immerse yourself in the music. Tabbi’s vocals, tender and soulful, weave through the groove with a mesmerizing quality that makes the song both intimate and danceable.
Listen to “Wake Me When It’s Over” and stay in the loop with The Heroic Enthusiasts.
