James Davis’ supergroup, The Project didn’t take much to get us swooning to its latest heart-rending explosive rock single, “whats it going to take,” freshly released this Jan 19.
Formerly the lead guitarist of Shameless, James Davis is making new waves in the Cali-rock scene with “whats it going to take.” Opening with nostalgic guitar tunes shimmering in the void, the drums thump into the soundscape with the energetic, raspy voice belting out of a painfully frustrated heart. The first line, “Sitting here alone on the edge of this bed where good love was made, and dreams were all shared,” is enough to get you going on that emotional route.
Behind the engaging and touching statement of the chorus, “What’s it gonna take to make you understand no one’s gonna love you the way I can,” is a destructive love story that might have run its course and left with much pain. Through the ranging vocals that reach their peak to give us a massive shot of unendurable agony, we start imagining ourselves in the narrator’s shoes.
Through thumping drums and sparkly cymbals cutting a cord into our bones, the guitars grind, drive to the crescendo, and blast with that melancholic high. But none of these instrumentals can be compared to that incredible voice, the depth of those vocals, and how they deliver the pain. However, we gotta admit they definitely complement the singer well.
If you like what you hear, listen to “whats it going to take” by The Project and look forward to its debut album, coming up very soon.
