Released on October 11, 2024, “When You Wake” marks a bold transformation for Forever at Midnight, as the powerhouse trio—comprising Liv Howlett (vocals), Evan Hughes (drums), and Josh Kim (guitars/programming)—evolves from their pop-punk roots into a darker, synth-heavy, metalcore sound.
The track powerfully explores the torment faced in an abusive relationship, diving deep into gaslighting, manipulation, and emotional isolation.
“When You Wake” opens with a blast of distorted guitars, crashing in like a car speeding toward the edge. The drums pellet down like bombshells, and atmospheric synths heighten the tension as Liv Howlett’s rich, lusciously sensational voice leads the way. She sings with a tender strength and gravity that goes from catchy to passionate and angsty to apprehensive and grave. The demonic growls ripping through the background just top the ferocity and match that of the blazing guitars.
Drawing inspiration from her own experiences and those of close friends, Howlett reflects on the insidious progression of abuse. As she explains, When You Wake tells the story of how a seemingly charismatic abuser slowly reveals their real faces and throws the victim into chaos, and before they know it, they become a manifestation of trauma itself.
“When You Wake” is a blistering portrayal of survival, anger, and the struggle to reclaim one’s identity after psychological devastation. Check it out on Spotify.
