California meets Chicago in a mesmerizing free folk sound in the single, “Where My Body Sleeps” by Halo Rider.
Markus James’ vocals are like aged whiskey, smooth yet packing a grave and melancholic punch. They intertwine with Anne Harris’ delicate and feathery harmonies, creating an earthy and ethereal sound.
The song sets out a vibe complemented by a dusty road stretching out beneath a twilight sky with its whimsical opening. The opening melody shimmers like heat waves rising from the asphalt, a bed of jangly organic music setting the scene. Then, the percussion kicks in with a steady, almost hypnotic pattering that feels like rain pelleting down on that dusty road.
Harris’ fiddle weaves its way through the song, a soulful wail echoing James’ yearning vocals. He sings sonorously, yet sincere as his voice rises with a slow, steady ache. You will find yourself singing along with the chorus, “…Till I get back to New Orleans where my body sleeps.” The line echoes with a longing so deep it feels primal. It’s a beautiful kind of sadness, the kind that tugs at your heartstrings without breaking them.
The bridge ups the ante with a noticeable thump in the percussion, building towards the outro. Halo Rider paints a vivid picture with sound, transporting the listener to a world steeped in mystery and longing. Their debut single, “Devil and Angel,” is already a hit, racking up streams and views.
