Canadian UK-based artist Athena Lim wonders if love is enough in her latest funk and folk-infused single, “White Dust.” She muses, how we chance ourselves to new beginnings with holes in our hearts like “cut flowers in a vase.”
Released on March 10 as only her second single, the artist outdoes herself by philosophically expressing herself in this engaging and sprightly track produced by James Atin-Godden.
From the opening notes, “White Dust” surprises with unique textures and a cheeky instrumentation. In the opening, we are hooked with clipped, snappy beats. Then they instantly slide to chalk rub and scratch sounds pulsating. Interestingly enough, you will find this particular texture grazing like a backbeat throughout the song. This brings a zesty and organic imaginative feel to the whole mood and aura. The relaxing and upbeat guitar tunes are the consistent drive that provides the music with its own catch.
Lim’s vocals are a highlight of the song, as she sings of intriguing characters with unique and eccentric characteristics. Her voice carries humor and wit which helps us ease into her verses of serious philosophy and introspections. Through her storytelling, Lim explores vulnerability, uncertainty, and the quest for connection in a world filled with imperfections.
With its vibrance, “White Dust” departs from Lim’s moodier debut single, “Being Someone,” released last Valentine’s Day. Stay tuned because there are two more tracks coming before summer. And in summer, you are getting a whole EP! Lim turns out quite ambitious as she is already hard at work with her second album, coming in 2025. This is an artist to keep a watch on!
