Winter by Our Violet Room: Review
Our Violet Room, alias Denver’s Matthew Birch, presents a four-seasonal trip with the single ‘Winter’. Lyrically, the indie-folk song traverses the seasons from winter to fall to summer, each time evoking a different mood to convey the dynamic shifts that occur between the characters. Based on his personal experience with divorce, the artist compares the passing of the seasons to the changing of relationships. Birch’s breathy lines are showcased in the song, along with guest vocals from Wildermiss Emma Cole and a thumping acoustic guitar, and the result is a heartbreaking masterpiece.
The influence of cinematic and traditional folk music is palpable in the composition. His music has been compared to those of Sufjan Stevens, Bon Iver, Bob Dylan, Peter Gabriel, and Coldplay because of its beautiful ambiance, passionate lyrics, and cinematic orchestration. The song is about changing moods and vibes, ups and downs in a relationship, just like the ever-changing seasons.
The acoustic guitar is the dominant instrument, with support from percussion, bass, and other instruments. The song is extremely melodic because of the combination of Birch’s compelling narrative voice and Cole’s spectral vocals. Those who aren’t already fans of Our Violet Room will enjoy this music for sure. It is one well-crafted song that demonstrates Birch’s abilities as a songwriter and his ability to make listeners feel something.
