Silverlake’s latest and first single, “X (I Should Be Digging)” from the upcoming album Exotic Metals Ltd. marks a hauntingly bold return for the three-piece dance and indie art pop band. The song opens with rippling, sparkling melodies inspired by a tape loop from a Tate St. Ives exhibition. Once the drums hit, the beats fall sharply, providing an energetic yet controlled momentum to the track. The instrumental grooves get our heads nodding.
Sally-Ann Parker’s soft, luscious, and tender vocals are a perfect counterbalance as she cuts through the textured instrumentals with a soft yet commanding and eccentric presence. She sings sultrily and breathily amidst the pulsating rhythm section. Her vocals get layered in the bridge as she sings sharply and tantalizingly while her breathtaking vibrato belts in the distance and has us swooning and folding.
Parker sings about being “on her knees in the mud” as she realizes she should be “digging for gold,” a metaphor for letting go of what’s unworthy and aiming for something more valuable.
Not to mention, Robin Dallaway’s guitar and keyboards created the vibrant yet haunting backdrop to immerse us in the music. Whereas Tony Sherrard’s bass and programming kept the song grounded with a groovy foundation.
“X (I Should Be Digging)” is a strong, atmospheric single that should keep you excited for Silverlake’s upcoming album Exotic Metals Ltd., set to release on October 25, 2024.
