Claudia Tomàs makes a quiet yet commanding debut with Yearnings of Modern Life, a five-track EP, meditating on disconnection, tenderness, and how it feels to really feel. Rooted in pop-soul, jazz, and folk, Claudia’s voice reaches you with gentleness, conviction, and an honesty that stays long after the song ends. It wraps you in a wool sweater and sits you down for some raw, vulnerable conversation you didn’t know you needed.
The opening track “Quarantined Senses” sets the tone as guitar plucks sway against a soft piano and subtle percussive ticking. Meanwhile, Claudia delivers lines with velvety depth and emotional precision. Her voice is rich, almost smoky, yet tinged with fragility. It’s intimate, honest, unafraid to linger in silence.
Then there’s “I’ve Seen You Lose,” the centerpiece of the EP and a staggering emotional peak. This is the track that left me breathless. The brushed percussion, hushed piano, and Claudia’s aching vibrato come together in a delicate and devastating way. The way she trails off in the chorus, “It makes me sad / To see you lose,” is like watching someone try not to break down while still holding your hand. Her empathy is palpable, and the lyrics cut deep.
“Landscapes” closes the record with poetic imagery and longing built around acoustic strums, twinkling piano in the bridge, and lyrics that trace memory like fingers on old photographs. Claudia sings as if she’s trying to reach someone far away, not with desperation, but with deep remembering.
Recorded live at Alquimia Records with a stellar jazz-folk ensemble, Claudia’s debut honors introspection. Listen to Yearnings of Modern Life on Spotify.
