Combining a whole story into the context of music has become customary in music. Artists like Taylor Swift and The Weeknd are known for crafting storylines with their own set of characters in their music. Ron Dayvu, the South African rapper, singer, and songwriter, has come up with something similar in his EP, โThe Doyenne.โ
Inspired by the 1818 novel โFrankensteinโ by Mary Shelley, Ron did a whole twist on the topic by making himself the mad scientist or prince who falls in love with the princess. The 7-track EP starts with โThe Prologue.โ The first track represents a dialogue of the authoritarian prince manifesting his desires to make the princess his, into the abyss, only for an electronic sound to start seeping in at the end, making its way seamlessly into the second track.
After every musical track, we are jumped into the storyline only conveyed by the princeโs narration of the princess. As the story unfolds, he abducts her to subject her to his Frankenstein experiment with Igor in hopes of enchanting her to his love forever. Assuming you all know how the story goes, the experiment fails. And there enters Ron Dayvuโs twist with The Doyenne in the 5th track, โThe Avowal.โ The transformed princess is now an unapologetic and confident young womanโsomething that our Disney princesses are worlds apart from, and the prince is ever more enamoured with it.
Ron Dayvu presents us with this spectacular story reinvented to throw dirt on the soft women trope we are all used to seeing on TV, with an alternative chill hop, pop, and R&B sound in โThe Doyenne.โ With atmospheric synths and smooth rapping skills, he uplifts women and feminine energy in his album. Welcome yourself to another worldly experience with Ron Dayvu today!
