Porthcawl-based producer, rapper, and songwriter Charlie J gives you deep and intellectual hip-hop with his mini-album, WE’RE ALL LOST.
WE’RE ALL LOST is a chilled and soothing soundscape, perfect for unwinding on a warm summer night. But it’s also perfect for finding insight and giving a second thought to everything you are doing with your life and whether you are feeding your potential.
The opening track, “A WORLD SO COLD,” gives off a mood of “meaninglessness” you feel when you are lost with a melancholic piano melody and spoken-word verses that simmer with frustration and turn to rap. As the song progresses, the artist’s flow intensifies and almost gets breathless. Meanwhile, the beat drops, mirroring the rising tide of emotions.
Tracks like “LOST” showcase a more engaging, catchy, and introspective field. He raps about working on himself “day and night”, and “recycling” his friends because he always pays the price but “never know the cost.”
The standout track, “WE GET LOW,” features Elina Lee’s airy, high vocals calmly singing the chorus around which the artist raps. He raps of being sick of “chasing the highs and lows” referring to the relatable, infamous, and ongoing battle against depression and addiction.
“OLDEST DAUGHTER” shifts the focus to another kind of loss—the loss of self in the constant act of giving to others. The gentle strings and piano create a poignant soundscape as Charlie J raps asking her what she wants and loves in life because she doesn’t deserve to live a life “stuck.”
Catch Charlie J inject maturity and morals into the UK hip-hop scene with his intimate storytelling in WE’RE ALL LOST.
