Welsh singer-songwriter Daddy Drwg has unleashed his debut album, A Tree Called Happy, and it’s a genre-bending rollercoaster ride you won’t want to miss.
A Tree Called Happy is an actual one-man show. The self-taught multi-instrumentalist with an education in music, Daddy Drwg wrote, performed, and produced every single track. The creative gives you everything.
“I’m Your Waste of Time” kicks off the album with a thumping beat and a sinisterly seductive vibe. Daddy Drwg’s deep vocals slither across the soundscape, building a sense of mystery and intrigue. The guitars snarl and swagger, perfectly capturing the song’s dark underbelly.
“1am GMT” takes a sharp turn into vulnerability. Soothing guitar strums and delicate strings create a safe space for Daddy Drwg to confess his fears and insecurities. His voice contrasts the intro and showcases the intimacy in his emotions.
Besides, “Words on the Back of My Hand” will get stuck in your head like a catchy jingle. A hypnotic folksy groove sets the stage for Daddy Drwg’s storytelling lyrics. The bridge throws in a surprising exhilaration with some gloriously steely, bendy, and glinting plucks.
“While the Cat’s Away” closes A Tree Called Happy with a reflective mood and expansive soundscape. Then, drums kick in with a heavy beat, jolting us out of our reverie. Daddy Drwg’s vocals return with grounding gravel, trailing off intriguingly, leaving us hanging on every word. Halfway through, the guitars distort, creating a hypnotic, swirling soundscape. The perfect ending to an album that’s anything but predictable.
