A year after the release of Adrenaline Slip, New Jersey producer Michael Keane returns under his Textbook Maneuver alias with Adrenaline Slapped, One Two Two, a striking companion release that celebrates the project while carving out a fresh identity of its own.
Issued as the inaugural vinyl pressing for Life Science Records, the limited 12-inch release embraces rarity with just 100 hand-numbered copies, but its real appeal lies in its inventive sequencing. Built around one original album cut, two remixes, and two standalone singles, the record feels like a reimagining of Textbook Maneuver’s evolving electronic universe.
The collection opens with “Adrenaline Slip,” immediately establishing its hypnotic pulse through smacking beats, jittery percussion, and a thick electronic groove. Bright melodic textures gradually bloom from beneath the rhythmic framework, giving the track a satisfying sense of expansion without ever sacrificing its tight momentum. Things then take an intriguing turn with “Adrenaline Slip (µ-Ziq Remix),” where legendary electronic producer Mike Paradinas reshapes the composition into something dreamier and more abstract. Hard-hitting breakbeats collide with hazy electronic washes and buzzing ambient textures, while hints of shoegaze-inspired atmosphere soften the rhythmic intensity into an intoxicating blur.
Meanwhile, “Birds (Branched Off Remix)” ventures even deeper into experimental territory. Bird calls, trembling percussion, swirling electronic flourishes, and writhing string textures fold into one another, creating an intricate sonic collage that constantly shifts beneath the listener. The arrangement gradually gathers weight, its shimmering layers rising into a surprisingly melodic climax despite its unconventional construction. Later, “I Get It, You Just Don’t Get It” strips things back into a calmer but equally captivating groove, balancing rumbling basslines and crisp, shaky percussion with an airy electronic backdrop that keeps the atmosphere immersive from beginning to end. Elsewhere, “Tell Them I’m Not Here, Still In Outerspace” drifts through muted rhythms, soft tapping beats, and droning ambience before blossoming into shimmering, rustling textures that feel wonderfully weightless.
Throughout Adrenaline Slapped, One Two Two, Keane demonstrates an impressive command of mood, texture, and rhythmic detail. Limited in quantity but expansive in imagination, this vinyl stands as both a fitting celebration of Adrenaline Slip and an exciting glimpse into Textbook Maneuver’s ever-evolving sonic landscape.
