FOLD’s latest album, At The End Of The Sun, is here to melt your face and mend your broken heart—all in one glorious listen. Released on May 13, this 13-track post-grunge masterpiece pulsates with raw emotion, grazing riffs, rugged drums, and throaty, powerful vocals.
From the opening track, “Part Of The Left Behind,” FOLD throws down the gauntlet with blazing razor-sharp distorted guitars and drums that hit you like a freight train. Stephan Alt’s vocals are a perfect match for the intensity, growling with a deep assertion that dares you to look away.
“Stranded To Fade” showcases FOLD’s dynamic range. The song starts with a deceptively peaceful chiming guitar, quickly overtaken by a pulsating drumbeat that builds the tension. Before you know it, the soothing guitar morphs into a full-blown grunge monster, its rhythmic roar perfectly complementing Alt’s vocals.
“Despicable Youth” is placed at the heart of the album, and it begged us for a listen. And so we did, to find Alt’s vibrato energetically tearing through distorted guitars. The guitars churn and rev distortedly like a frustrated engine, giving away the angst and rebellion of the song’s title.
At The End Of The Sun culminates hauntingly with its title track. With splashing cymbals, the guitars brood. Alt’s contemplative vocals come heavy, only to take on an anguished edge in the bridge, surging with frustrated and vehement passion.
You can’t really pin the grunge force of FOLD, but their sound can be compared to Alice In Chains, Soundgarden, or the Foo Fighters. So if you are into that stuff, At The End Of The Sun is a must-listen.
