“Audio Bicycle Day” is the latest single from guitarist and composer Ari Joshua, joined by an impressive lineup of musicians including Delvon Lamarr on the Hammond organ, Skerik on saxophone, and Polyrhythmics drummer Grant Schroff. Released on August 23rd, this jazz-funk gem is part of Joshua’s ambitious project to release 24 songs in 2024, and it delivers a richly immersive experience.
“Audio Bicycle Day” opens with a steady tapping beat that sets a hypnotic pace, soon accompanied by brooding brass. Skerik’s saxophone effortlessly introduces hooky rhythms, flowing with unhurried grace, constantly dropping in new waves of blows to get us washed over by their flow. As the Hammond organ tones come in, intricate rhythms begin to captivate, while Schroff’s drumming sparkles in the background, giving the piece a buoyant groundedness that keeps our ears engaged throughout. Midway through, the brass section intensifies, adding a groovy, soulful grandeur, and the song becomes even more dynamic.
Joshua’s guitar work provides a bluesy edge and guides listeners through alleyways of smooth riffs and soulful bends. The guitar’s curving drifts add emotional depth, perfectly complementing Lamarr’s organ rhythms, which ooze retro-soul warmth. Mixed by Jason Gray and mastered by Doug Krebs, the interplay of the instruments and the seamlessly masterful production get us swooning and strung in a dialogue of riffs, rhythms, and grooves.
As the third version of “Audio Bicycle Day,” this imagining takes you back memory lane to the golden days of funk, with the relaxing, modern lushness still keeping things interesting. Whether you’re a fan of retro grooves or psychedelic soundscapes, this track is sure to leave you nodding your head and wanting more.
