Barry Muir stirs our souls with heart-rending, relatable and inspiring stories in his latest album, Bakersfield, released on April 10. This album culminates Muir’s musical journey, with his growth provoking compelling stories through song.
Starting with “Show Me the Way,” a soulful ballad that sets the tone for a touching redemption. Muir’s soft, high voice, accompanied by relaxing guitar strumming and soulful harmonies, sings of returning from a path of self-discovery towards another.
The title track, “Bakersfield,” can’t be missed. It engages us with its hard-thumping drums and compelling narrative. Muir portrays someone living day-to-day in Bakersfield, caught in a cycle of wasting time and stealing. With a voice filled with adamant determination and desperate frustration, Muir sings of the need to find a way out and start anew.
As the album progresses, tracks like “Seeing Red” inject a dose of upbeat energy with dancey and jangly rhythms and catchy hooks that are bound to get your feet tapping. The infectious chorus of “I am seeing red/Like a modern parting of the red sea” becomes an earworm that you’ll find yourself singing along to long after the song ends.
Finally, the album closes with “Time Keeps Going On,” a reflection on a life filled with upbeat strumming and an exhilarating sense of optimism. Muir sings of being grateful for the happy days that have passed and looks forward with hope to the future.
But Muir’s musical journey doesn’t start with “Bakersfield.” With a career spanning decades and a resume that includes collaborations with some of the industry’s biggest names, Muir’s passion for music continues to drive him forward.
