The “sob”-worthy addition to the all-star Barbie soundtrack, “What Was I Made For?,” by BILLIE EILISH, has debuted its self-directed video. The video, which was shot in a single take, shows Eilish choosing Barbie outfits modeled after her own looks for the red carpet. Rain, wind, and earthquakes dampen the lone play date, though.
Eilish and her brother Finneas recorded the piano ballad at Finneas’ home studio in Los Angeles. Eilish sings, “Think I forgot / How to be happy / Something I’m not / But something I can be / Something I wait for / Something I’m made for / Something I’m made for.”
“In January, Greta showed me and Finneas a handful of some unfinished scenes from the film; we had nooooo idea what to expect at ALLL,” Eilish wrote in a statement published shortly after the release of the video. We were so deeply moved, in fact, that when we were writing the following day, we COULD NOT STOP TALKING ABOUT IT. As a result, we ended up writing almost the entire song that night. To be honest with you, everything seemed to fall into place just as I needed it. I’m incredibly grateful for that. This video makes me cry, and I hope it will do the same for you. It means so much to me. I won’t say much more than that because I believe it will speak for itself.
