โBefore Daylightโ by A Farewell Device bursts through the door with heart on sleeve, guts on display, gleaming into the open. The project, helmed by Bay Area singer-songwriter Justin Vanegas, features soaring guitars and punchy drums. Released in three waves, โHelp to Lieโ in June, โ51Aโ in July, and the full album in August, Before Daylight leans into the messy aftermath of love and self-discovery without losing its bite of resilience.
โHelp to Lieโ sets the tone right away with Vanegasโs tender, vulnerable vocals floating over strummed guitars and pounding drums, until the bridge strips down to a chilling, whispery cold lines. Then, just as quickly, the song cracks wide open with his voice climbing skyward, the band crashing behind him in a cathartic release.
By the time โ51Aโ rolls around, urgency takes the wheel. Itโs tense and impassioned the way Vanegasโs voice pleads, strains, and claws against the smacking percussion and chiming guitars that rise and fall like an argument with yourself.
But Before Daylight doesnโt live only in the heavy moments. โDid I Do That?โ spins the record into brighter territory, with jubilant vibrance. Its organic percussion sparkles and shakes while Vanegas trades heartfelt and impassioned lines with a female vocalist in a lively duet.
All told, Before Daylight is a survival manual, messy and alive, daring you to feel everything before the night gives way to morning.
