Miles East takes us through the tempestuous waters of love on the rocks on his new album, Between Lightning and Thunder. Produced by the acclaimed Blake Morgan, this ten-song odyssey has found much love since its release on June 7
Between Lightning and Thunder opens with “Better Than Here,” a track that shimmers with a dark beauty. Gently strummed guitars and soft, echoing drums tap into our feels as East’s voice, both tense and hopeful, portrays a desperate optimism amidst the storm. It foreshadows the constant push and pull between the longing for light and the looming threat of darkness.
While some tracks, like “Lucky To Be Here Tonight,” help us realize amidst our raging seas that there’s a lighthouse nearby with upbeat tempos and shimmering guitars.
The title track, “Between Lightning and Thunder,” truly delivers on the album’s name. It creates a droning immersion, under which hypnotic guitar strums away. Meanwhile, East sings about being there for someone even at their worst with the imagery of lightning, thunder, skies, horizons, and dawn flashing before us.
Between Lightning and Thunder reaches its climax with the closing track, “All I Need.” This simple, stripped-down ballad serves as a quiet redemption. East’s voice overflows with devotion as he sings of a love that has weathered the storm.
Between Lightning and Thunder is a journey filled with equal parts heartache and hope. Listen to this heartfelt masterpiece East, along with Morgan and the rest of the band, has crafted a masterpiece for you.
