Austin-based musician Paula Laubach, under her solo moniker Daph Veil, dives deep into the dark undercurrents of toxic love with her new single, โBloodsucker.โ Released on September 26, 2025, the track takes shape as a feverish soundscape that straddles genres, part alt-rock, part shoegaze, with smoldering hints of blues and electronica. Produced by Matt Parmenter at the Ice Cream Factory Studio, the single bears the unmistakable mark of an artist in full control of her craft, as Laubach performs nearly every instrument herself, while drummer Joe Valadez and lyricist Rebecca Price add texture and bite to an already visceral composition.
The song opens with a sultry guitar riff, soft, steady, and deceptively inviting. Then come the hypnotic vocals, as Laubachโs voice drips with restrained tension. The mood lingers in that sweet spot of slow-burning anticipation until, suddenly, the whole thing explodes, with the drums crashing, guitars distorting, and the once-smoky atmosphere morphing into a storm of chaos. Itโs as if the song itself turns on the listener, echoing the emotional violence of the โbloodsuckerโ sheโs singing about.
The layered harmonies mirror that split identity, with the calm exterior opposing the inner wreckage and her vocals spiraling upward in a mix of rage and release.
โBloodsuckerโ can come as a descent and an awakening all at once, while being an anthem for anyone whoโs loved too hard, lost themselves in the process, and clawed their way back.
