Dave Hill Jr. turns the search for inspiration into something tender and deeply ordinary with “Chasing Stars.” Rather than romanticizing the creative process, the Seattle singer-songwriter places it right in the middle of everyday life, where there are children running around, practical responsibilities waiting and barely enough time to sit down with a guitar. The indie folk-rock song is about trying to hold onto the part of yourself that still wants to make something.
The track begins gently, with soft guitar strumming supporting Hill’s thick, emotional voice. He sings warmly and quietly, giving the verses the feeling of an intimate confession. Vulnerably, he describes searching for a melody that seems to keep slipping away, as though inspiration is something he has to chase before the day swallows it whole. Then the drums begin beating slowly and firmly, accompanied by jittery percussion that gives the song a little more momentum without disturbing its reflective mood.
What makes “Chasing Stars” especially engaging is how directly it connects creativity with domestic life. Heartbeats seem to be knocking at the door while little feet rush across the floor, yet the guitar remains irresistible. Hill is trying to find a small pocket of time within them. The “star” becomes a lovely metaphor for that elusive creative spark, something distant enough to chase but bright enough to keep him moving.
The song itself grew from a songwriting exercise about finding a melody before writing the words, and that premise becomes part of its emotional core. Produced by Seattle guitarist Jeff Fielder, with Hill handling vocals, drums and piano, the track feels deliberately uncluttered and personal.
At its heart, “Chasing Stars” is about refusing to let the ordinary completely drown out the imaginative. Sometimes finding your way forward means chasing one small light and turning it into a song.
