Chinese Man Records drops tuneful new song ‘Boarded Up Portals’
From the upcoming Odd Holiday album, ‘Boarded Up Portals’ is the second single. This song perfectly captures the group’s overall hip-hop style, which combines smooth, vivid lyricism with an abstract, cinematic soul.
Odd Holiday turns left when everyone else turns right, and when they enter the portal, they board it up after them. This song is equally lovely and melancholic. The perfect setting for lyrical mind games is provided by drawn-out angelic vocal samples that are shrouded in darkness.
Rapper/producer duo Odd Holiday is composed of members from North London and North Carolina. When Daylight Robbery takes on production duties, he departs significantly from his jazz background and broadens his repertoire to include a minefield of unexpected loops and chops that are rooted in experimental alternative hip-hop. The music is co-produced by Mattic, who performs as the MC under the alias “The Ghost In The Machine” and adds sonic flourishes that give the album its distinct sound.
His vocals contribute a loose, carefree style that initially seems like simple conversation but ultimately reveals layers of abstract complexity. Odd Holiday pushes their influences into new realms of the slightly odd, off-kilter, and completely compelling while keeping one foot in underground nostalgia (Madlib, Alchemist, Special Herbs).
