In the midst of lockdown’s creative turbulence, Procrastinatrix emerged as a sonic alchemist, concocting mesmerizing electronic soundscapes with a unique blend of pop sensibility and experimental prowess with “Chromatic Aberration.
“Morphogenic Field” opens the album, conjuring the essence of Sheldrake’s intriguing theory about blueprints within fields. It’s a sonic blueprint itself, setting the stage for what follows. “Abilify” is a nod to the mood-enhancing drug, which seems to grant the artist superhuman creative abilities, evident throughout the album. “Everything Else” is a melodically pleasing gem, and “Amygdala” pays tribute to the late musician Joe Black (Nexus23), a heartfelt remembrance wrapped in musical embrace.
“Vertex Sibling” playfully references the godfather of weird electronica, Aphex Twin, offering an intriguing sonic exploration. “An Intrusion of Cockaroaches” invokes deliciously creepy vibes, much like its namesake. “Throng” thrives on spunkiness, reflecting the frenetic energy of life’s beginnings, while “Wilberforce Strikes Again” adds a mysterious twist to the narrative.
The album’s poignant climax arrives with “A Beautiful Sense of Loss,” a touching ode to the artist’s mother. It’s a moment of reflection and remembrance that touches the heartstrings.
Throughout “Chromatic Aberration,” Procrastinatrix deftly navigates the realms of synth-pop and experimentica, creating a sonic universe that is catchy, discombobulating, hypnotic, wonky, and strangely captivating.
Procrastinatrix’s Patreon community offers an exclusive glimpse into the creative process behind this album, a testament to the artist’s commitment to his craft. As Procrastinatrix himself succinctly puts it, “Your favorite band you’ve just never heard of.”
