Kenny Mehler’s Cornbread & Whiskey is the country-rock album that wears its personality loudly. It is playful, nostalgic and full of movement, blending pop-country warmth with big harmonies, sturdy rhythms and hooks that seem designed to stick around. Across the record, Mehler moves between mischievous memories, relationship fallout and outright celebration, giving the album a lived-in quality rather than making it feel like polished country escapism.
The title track, “Cornbread and Whiskey,” captures that playful side immediately. Thumping, steady beats smack out a catchy rhythm while Mehler sings with a cheeky energy about an ex who could turn every ordinary day into a Saturday night. Memories of teenage rebellion, secret drinking, and reckless nights pile up into a story that’s itself amused. The Southern imagery gives the track its flavour, while the repetitive hook makes it an easy singalong.
“Lights Out,” meanwhile, pulls the album into more reflective territory. It opens hauntingly and immersively before a catchy rhythm arrives beneath Mehler’s raspy, gritty voice. He sings with charisma but also vulnerability, addressing the painful end of a relationship while asking the other person to leave a light on. The song understands that leaving does not necessarily mean becoming emotionally absent. Sometimes you can walk away while still hoping there is a place for you in someone’s memory.
Then “Gin and Juice” throws the doors open again. Soft, relaxing guitar strumming gives way to splashing drums, lively country instrumentation, and rapidly churning fiddle. Mehler turns Snoop Dogg’s laid-back hip-hop classic into something far more boisterous and country-flavoured, allowing the familiar song to take on an entirely different personality.
Ultimately, Cornbread & Whiskey thrives on contrast. It can be sentimental one moment and mischievous the next, but Mehler never loses his instinct for a catchy melody. It is country-rock made for remembering old mistakes, raising a glass, and singing along anyway.
