Washington, D.C. artist, songwriter and producer R. Nelson takes one musical idea and keeps turning it around in his hands on Cup Of Tea, a six-track EP that explores love, vulnerability and connection from several different angles. Nelson uses each version to gradually expand the original concept, creating something that feels more like a conversation unfolding than a collection of remixes.
The original “Cup Of Tea” sets the emotional foundation with shimmery, softly chiming guitar and steady taps beneath Nelson’s sensational, melodic voice. He sings about learning how to love while reaching for closeness with someone who remains guarded, perhaps afraid of letting another person get too close. There is tenderness in the performance, but also a sense of patience—the narrator wants connection without pretending that emotional walls can disappear overnight.
“Cup Of Tea (Def Alt)” and “Cup Of Tea (Early Draft)” then show how flexible that central idea can be. Instead of treating alternate versions as afterthoughts, Nelson gives the song room to reveal different textures and personalities, allowing listeners to hear how production can reshape the emotional character of the same musical foundation.
The perspective shifts beautifully with “Perfectly Steeped (Two Cups of Tea),” where female and male voices come together in a contented, exhilarating duet over soft, thumping beats. What began as one person asking for intimacy becomes something shared—a musical conversation in which two perspectives finally meet.
The EP closes with “I Didn’t Change, I Expanded.” featuring Geese Da Goon, extending Nelson’s storytelling world even further. Across six tracks, Cup Of Tea proves that sometimes the best way to explore an idea is not to leave it behind, but to keep digging until you discover everything hiding underneath.
