Delta of Venus is back, and they’re delivering all the hazy, heartfelt, and atmospheric vibes you didn’t know you needed. After starting in a basement practice room in 1993—armed with instruments they couldn’t even play—the band has reformed, refined, and released “Disengaged b/w Slipping,” their first new material since their revival.
The result? A two-track journey through shoegaze and indie pop that feels like stepping into a dream you can’t quite wake up from.
Right out of the gate, “Disengaged” sets the tone with shimmering guitar chords that stream and ripple through the air like sunlight on water. Beneath the clean strums and pounding drums lies a lush orchestral pulse, adding an unexpected grandeur that lifts the track to emotional heights.
Then there’s Issy. Her voice is soft yet piercing, carrying vulnerability and raw emotion as she sings:
“I am fighting, I am trying to lose / If I win, maybe I will lose you.”
It’s the kind of lyric that hits you right in the chest. The song paints a vivid picture of someone wrestling with the painful realization that they need to let go of a toxic partner to find themselves again.
If “Disengaged” is the bittersweet sunlight, “Slipping” is the fog rolling in. The track opens with muffled guitar strumming that feels like it’s coming from another room. Slowly, the fog lifts, and a wave of electric guitars and thumping drums crashes in, taking the song to a new intensity.
Issy’s weary yet captivating vocals are front and center again, delivering an honest and transparent performance about feeling like you’re losing your grip. Her voice intertwines with the music, shimmering and shimmering until the song leaves you in a reflective daze.
What makes this release stand out is Delta of Venus’ refusal to stick to conventional song structures. Grab your headphones, close your eyes, and find out why.
