The album kicks off with the intro track “Keep Going,” setting the tone for the emotional and introspective journey that lies ahead. Tally Koren’s high-pitched vocals have a gossamer-like tone that ranges from high to low.
In her titular track, Koren brings out that past pain with her subdued tone and melancholic mood. “Do you Believe in Me?” was personally afflicted by a difficult time in her life, and that’s what makes this song so heartbreaking. Yet knowing she has successfully triumphed over that situation shows it was just a situation.
The reissue edition of “Free Will” explores the concept of personal agency, the power to make choices in our lives, and the hold that self-doubt has on our lives. The down-tempo music helps add grandeur to Tally Koren’s dramatism.
With “Two Kisses,” we get a mesmerizing, siren-like conclusion that showcases Koren’s masterful expression of her vulnerability as an artist with stripped-down instrumentation of tapping drums giving way to an intense passion. The heartfelt lyrics like, “A kiss is such a small thing that truly means a lot/Now you have gone forever, a kiss is all I have got.” sung passionately with her high, breathy voice add intimacy and longing to her song.
