Mechelen, Belgium-based artist Berang is back with his latest Does It Ever Get Better? An emotionally driven album that should just be right up your alley if you are into anything like The Weakerthans and Bob Dylan. Released on the 30th of January, the Belgian singer-songwriter, Bert Janssens, is already off to a 50 + day tour, where he will be promoting the album across various venues.
When the world all around is being pressed and purged to its limits, this record brings you protest songs, all passionate and soulful, full of vivacious guitars. If you have been feeling out of it lately, these songs might just reinsert the hope back within.
โThe Least Fortunate Timelineโ opens the album with fuzzy guitars churning in the air while the drums thump and the cymbals splash. We are introduced to Bert Janssensโ softness as he sings lightly and relaxingly, balancing out the instrumentals with just the right indie, moody soul.
Coming sixth in line is the title track, with its big drums keeping you grounded in momentum, while the folksy melodies keep you relaxed. He sings, โWe believe, we hope until we drown.โ Towards the end, you will find a stirring and sensitive harmonica trailing amidst the bustle. It genuinely uplifts as the sharp tanginess of the harmonica gets you focusing on its line of melody amidst the noise. The singerโs voice is there already, being calm and everything as always.
The last track, โSupport Of Any Kind,โ comes around with a sounding buzz that spreads and dissipates and fills your ears, while the cymbals sparkle. The singer with high grain comes singing softly and slowly, so that the soundscape vacates for him. He sings, โItโs been several years, I learned how to cope,โ recalling the bittersweet journey that starts with separation. As the chorus comes with throbbing beats and shimmering guitars, he soars gently, โAs we move on in separate ways, so we evolve into different shapes/Itโs back and forth and everything in between/I am happy to know I could be your soulโฆโ The emotions work like a halo draping the whole aural field with its beautiful agony.
