Tomek Zdyb steps into a new artistic era with “Don’t Look ‘Em In The Eyes,” turning the myth of Medusa into a sharp metaphor for idolization, manipulation and losing sight of your own worth. The Opole, Poland-based singer-songwriter has built his music around emotional honesty and stories about experiences that are often difficult to confront, and this new single carries that instinct into mythology. Here, the monster is not simply the figure staring back from an ancient tale, but the person placed so high on a pedestal that their harmful behaviour becomes almost impossible to see.
Hard-hitting beats and immersive electronic production immediately pull the track forward. Zdyb’s husky voice moves quickly across the arrangement, delivered with a hypnotic, catchy rhythm that makes the song difficult to ignore. There is a satisfying head-bobbing quality to the groove, but underneath the hookiness is something considerably darker. His vocal feels caught between fascination and alarm, mirroring the attraction to someone who gradually reveals themselves to be dangerous.
The lyrics lean heavily into surreal imagery, describing the subject as a fairytale, a work of art, a godlike figure and something as distant as a galaxy. That idealization slowly cracks as the narrator realizes how much dignity he has surrendered. The Medusa metaphor becomes particularly effective in the post-chorus, where the warning not to look into Gorgona’s eyes is followed by an instruction to use the mirror, to recognize your own face, rather than remaining transfixed by someone else.
The second verse brings that realization into the present, with forgiveness rejected and the narrator finally insisting that he does not care. Then comes a rapid-fire rap passage that captures the messy aftermath of manipulation, with apology, temptation, anger and the lingering feeling of being hypnotized.
Catchy enough to sing along to but deep enough to leave a sting, “Don’t Look ‘Em In The Eyes” transforms an ancient warning into a modern lesson. It’s that sometimes the person you have been worshipping is the very thing keeping you from seeing yourself.
