Manchester-based band Outside Now plunges listeners into their sonic outworldly solarium with their debut LP, โDream House.โ
The opening track, โWheeling Empire Bright,โ begins with an exceptionally ghostly and chilling atmosphere. The music doesnโt start until you have waited for 8 seconds. And once you have done so, a gaseous, hazy, and blurry immersive orchestra emanates from the field while a steely creaking or chirping sound continues in a repetitive manner.
With the conclusion of this short track, we are brought into the even more immersive and heavy second track, โFollow the Slope Down.โ The track features vocals for the first time on the LP, with husky and low female vocals hazily echoed into the musical immersion with a similar synergy. The piano is more prominent here.
One of the standout tracks is its title track, โDream House,โ itself, which is a striking nocturne for its vaporous piano played like dripping water droplets in the midst of an ancient cave.
The incorporation of seventies prog rock amongst the nocturnes in tracks like โOverlooked, Overseenโ adds a dynamic and adventurous element to the album. Complex arrangements, intricate guitar work, percussion, and progressive structures add depth, intricacy, and a jazzy, urban, moody New York City bar vibe to the album.
Through atmospheric and mystical psychedelia incorporated in the dream pop and somewhat shoegaze orchestral arrangements, with a mix from the grunge rock palette, especially from the seventies prog rock, โDream Houseโ is a masterful testament to Outside Nowโs versatility and musical prowess.
