Coming out of Battle Creek, Michigan, Fine Red Mist arrives with his self-titled EP that sounds like standing inside a thunderstorm wrapped in velvet. Built from the combined histories of seasoned local musicians who had crossed paths in various bands over the years, the project carries the confidence of artists who finally found the right chemistry at the right time. Pulling from the dreamy haze of Cocteau Twins, My Bloody Valentine, and Slowdive, with an unexpected metallic snarl inspired by Slayer, Fine Red Mist creates a beautiful and bruising sound.
What separates this EP from the crowded shoegaze revival pack is its refusal to bury emotion beneath endless walls of reverb. The vocals stand front and center, clear enough to cut through the fog while the instrumentation churns heavily underneath. Recorded entirely at Lake Effect Studios by guitarist Joby W. Purucker, the project balances density with restraint remarkably well. One moment, the guitars are swallowing the room whole; the next, the songs pull back and breathe, allowing the emotional weight to land properly.
Opening track “Half Life” sets the tone immediately with fuzzy, slow-burning guitars and steady drums that drag forward like exhausted footsteps. Jeff Clements sings with a thick, aching tenderness, singing about losing direction and no longer recognizing himself with painful sincerity. With devastation simmering underneath the haze, there’s yearning in every word.
Then “The Fourth Wall” cranks the intensity upward. The guitars grind and shimmer simultaneously, creating a noisy tidal wave while the vocals soar above it all with near-desperate urgency. It’s one of the EP’s most immersive moments, where melody and distortion lock together so tightly they become inseparable.
Later, “Diablo” leans into a darker, heavier atmosphere. The pace slows, the sonic fog clears slightly, and what remains feels strangely intimate. Clements’ voice aches with tension and need, gliding through the cleaner haze while the instrumentation pulses ominously beneath him.
Across the EP, Fine Red Mist understands that heaviness means nothing without emotional clarity. This record gives you something human to hold onto inside the noise.
