South Lake Tahoe electronic artist iLo Fields finds a poignant new emotional language on his five-track release, Gemini Summer. Born during his journey into sobriety, the EP served as a creative lifeline, a way to process feelings without shutting them off. Drawing inspiration from the spacious ambient textures of Bonobo and the intimate indie folk of Bon Iver, Fields builds his tracks around warm, atmospheric beds of sound before even touching a drum pad. The hypnotically bittersweet snapshot of rebuilding one’s life captures a mood that feels simultaneously happy and sad.
The EP hits the ground running with its standout opener, “Vesper.” Built on a brooding bassline and catchy, smug electronic beats, the track weaves rich sonic textures with high, childish vocals delivered in broken fragments. Further into the tracklist, “Here and Now” keeps the momentum going with its infectious rhythm and compelling spoken-word element. A recorded male voice calmly prompts the listener to reflect on what they are doing in the present moment, before shifting into the nostalgic sound of kids playing and having fun.
