Finnish electronic alt-pop artist Conchis turns stillness into sound on “Under Your Feathers,” the second preview of her forthcoming album Gravity. Following 2024’s Chapters and the recently released “Streetlights,” the August 21 single arrives as an intimate plea for shelter, shaped by a period when Conchis was forced into profound physical stillness. Yet somehow, the song slowly gathers weight, breathes, and rises.
Written during months spent largely confined to a bathroom floor during a severe ME/CFS crash, “Under Your Feathers” carries an extraordinary creative premise: with traditional instruments and tools out of reach, Conchis composed the music entirely in her head. That sense of inwardness comes through. The track begins almost suspended in air, its hopeful arpeggios and celestial synth pads creating a hazy pocket of light. Then the atmosphere thickens. Deep basslines creep underneath while coiled percussion and heavy, steely industrial thumps gradually make themselves known, like distant machinery breaking through fog.
At the centre is Conchis’ high, husky voice, which swells and soars above a second vocal layer. Her delivery feels simultaneously fragile and enormous, particularly as the drums begin to pellet the soundscape with increasing force. The immersion is almost physical: warmth and menace, weight and lift, all occupying the same space.
And that is precisely the point. Conchis has built “Under Your Feathers” around contradiction, hope against resignation, movement against stagnation, brightness against darkness. Rather than resolving those tensions, she lets them rub against each other.
Produced and mixed by Jonas Verwijnen and mastered by Henkka Niemistö, the track makes a compelling case for Gravity, due this fall. Conchis may have written from a place of collapse, but “Under Your Feathers” finds something quietly defiant within it: the fragile, stubborn desire to keep reaching for the light.
