E.G. Phillips released a new track ‘Party in the Sunset’
Keep Walking Music included the EP’s first single, “Chained to the Sun,” as part of their Amelia’s Big Eight Feature for the first week of July. The jazz-influenced album Phillips released earlier this year, “Alien from an Alternate Earth,” is followed by “Mental Maps,” which is also his second collaboration with Nashville-based producer Kenny Schick, who previously worked on Phillips’ EP “Nashville Recordings, Vol. 1.”
The phrase “Sunset” in the title and refrain of this song refers to a neighborhood in western San Francisco that is less well-known and is bordered by the ocean rather than the actual sunset; it is not a neighborhood that is particularly popular with tourists or even other city residents.
Prior to his largely annual birthday show on August 6 at San Francisco’s legendary Bazaar Cafe in the Outer Richmond district, Phillips releases this chirpy, 1950s beach party-inspired song. This is the sixth time that Phillips has held this peculiar event, where he invites other local musicians to perform his songs at what he has dubbed “EGPhest.” The lyrics, which might otherwise hit a little too close to home, should make it clear how ironic the timing is. In addition to the singer’s relatable social anxiety, it is also clear that she is preoccupied with a person who is not there and with whom she finds it difficult to connect and communicate without risking being misunderstood.
The “Mental Maps” EP in its entirety will be released on October 21.
