YME’s “ENEMY” is a haunting electronica and instrumental track that’s sure to get you transported to a whole another dimension. The song opens with an eerie synth melody and a lulling vocal that sets the stage for metallic beats to enter. Ymkje de Bijl, the vocalist, has a sensational voice echoing into the electronica blending perfectly with it, creating a soulful dimension to an otherwise hard, dark, and low-beating track.
Bijl angelically delivers the course of moving on from heartache and toxicity, leaving the past to dust as the beats crunch from the back. It’s hard to define which is more atmospheric, Bijl and her vocals or the instrumentals by Marco Roosink. The driving rhythm is impossible to resist, and when combined with the perpendicularly set rising vocals and the crunchy and smashing pauses, “ENEMY” becomes an infectious track.
What sets “ENEMY” apart from other electronica and instrumental tracks is YME’s ability to infuse emotion into the music. The song has a raw and edgy quality that makes it stand out from the crowd. Bijl’s vocals soar at their own pace against the driving beat, never intending to compete against it, only complementing it with a softness and vulnerable vigor rendered like a siren, which the dark, metallic, and gritty instrumentals could never assume. Together, they are vicious. It’s a song that’s made to be played at maximum volume, with the music enveloping you in its intensity. So what are you waiting for? Play it!
