1. Can you tell us a bit about where you come from and how it all got started?
JAS Von: 1. I come from a small town in central Florida I’ve always had a passion for music and singing since I was little, I first started in a band as the lead singer which taught me a lot about songwriting and ended up going my own way solo where I now put my heart into my songs.
2. Did you have any formal training or are you self-taught?
JAS Von: I am self-taught.
3. Who were your first and strongest musical influences and why the name ‘JAS Von’?
JAS Von: I never really had anyone that influenced me but growing up I used to sing to a lot of YouTube karaoke songs from artists like Katy Perry, Adele, Bruno Mars, Drake, Beyoncé, and Christina Aguilera.
I chose the name JAS VON because a lot of people seem to call me JAS and my middle name is Von Motzfeldt so I thought JAS VON was a good mix.
4. What do you feel are the key elements in your music that should resonate with listeners, and how would you personally describe your sound?
JAS Von: I would describe my sound as almost a new sound because I tend to mix urban, pop and country into one which is something I have never really heard before.
5. For most artists, originality is first preceded by a phase of learning and, often, emulating others. What was this like for you? How would you describe your own development as an artist and music maker, and the transition towards your own style, which is known as POP?
JAS Von:
I write and create my songs based on my life experiences everything I write about is a true story that I hope will relate to others. And everything else like the beats just flows naturally.
6. What’s your view on the role and function of music as political, cultural, spiritual, and/or social vehicles – and do you try and affront any of these themes in your work, or are you purely interested in music as an expression of technical artistry, personal narrative, and entertainment?
JAS Von:
I think music is a very powerful tool that can bring awareness to the world, allowing you to connect with different people through your message. But as for now, I do prefer a more personal narrative.
7. Do you feel that your music is giving you back just as much fulfillment as the amount of work you are putting into it or are you expecting something more, or different in the future?
JAS Von:
I for sure feel that my music is giving me back a great amount of fulfilment it’s a good feeling to listen to my song that is done and sounds great after all the hard work put into it. My dream with my music is to go as far as possible with it all I want my music heard all around the world .
8. Could you describe your creative processes? How do usually start, and go about shaping ideas into a completed song? Do you usually start with a tune, a beat, or a narrative in your head? And do you collaborate with others in this process?
JAS Von:
I normally start writing a song in a few different ways. I may come up with some lyrics and a melody first, then lay some chords down on the piano or I’ll find a beat that I really like and write to it. I normally always start with a verse first.
9. What has been the most difficult thing you’ve had to endure in your life or music career so far?
JAS Von: I would say the most difficult thing in my life that I’ve had to endure is coming down with a health issue that has held me back a lot and going through a heartbreak. Both have put me threw a lot of dark times but looking back now I have come over most of all of it and it’s giving me a lot of strength and a lot of great songs have come out of those dark times so in a way I appreciate them both.
10. On the contrary, what would you consider a successful, proud or significant point in your life or music career so far?
JAS Von: Seeing my first music video finished.
11. With social media having a heavy impact on our lives and the music business in general, how do you handle criticism, haters, and/or naysayers in general? Is it something you pay attention to, or simply ignore?
JAS Von: I ignore it and keep on being myself and doing what I love.
12. Creative work in a studio or home environment, or interaction with a live audience? Which of these two options excites you most, and why?
JAS Von: I love being in the studio because I feel like it’s just me and my music coming to life and that’s a feeling that I can’t describe.
