My New Gear is a rock group with members from Italy, England, and Japan that come from a variety of backgrounds. Among them are upcoming artists, including a game designer. Numerous music enthusiasts have shown support for their music. Despite being together for a short while, the bandโs skillful members and distinctive sound indicate that they might put out new music more quickly than a new game. Check out the exclusive interview below:
1. Can you tell us a bit about where you come from and how it all got started?
MY NEW GEAR: The band was formed in the 2000s when Jon Makishu, Tim Rock, and Ben Dusker were attending art school in Japan. After graduating, San Francisco friends Pete Smith, Roger Oddo, and Cage joined us. They told me, โWhat your band is missing is us, so weโll join the band.โ
2. Did you have any formal training or are you self-taught?
MY NEW GEAR: Jon started playing classical piano at the age of 3 and electric guitar in middle school. Tim and Ben are self-taught since the band boom in high school. The three of them became creators at a Japanese game company. Pete and Roger are self-taught with a background in electronic music using synthesizers. Cage studied music technology at an engineering school. What we have in common is that we like spaghetti, fried chicken, and curry rice.
3. Who were your first and strongest musical influences and why the name โMY NEW GEAR?
MY NEW GEAR: We like BONJOVI and PINK FLOYD. The origin of the bandโs name was that we liked the phrase โMy New Gearโ that Japanese Twitter users tweet when they purchased musical instruments or equipment, so we decided on that.
4. What do you feel are the key elements in your music that should resonate with listeners, and how would you personally describe your sound?
MY NEW GEAR: We want to bring back the band boom. I want to create rock for the 2020s by fusing classical rock, hard rock, progressive rock, etc. I guess the concept is to buy new instruments and compose new songs. I think we should just make what we want to hear.
5. For most artists, originality is first preceded by a phase of learning and, often, emulating others. What was this like for you? How would you describe your own development as an artist and music maker, and the transition towards your own style, which is known as Rock?
MY NEW GEAR: Thatโs exactly right. We like BONJOVI and PINK FLOYD, so we learned by watching their live DVDs. We donโt just imitate, they improvise different parts as if they were performing together. Finding your own style wasnโt that difficult. We felt that we could discover something new by assembling members with diverse musical backgrounds. My prediction turned out to be correct, and the album includes songs that I wrote 23 years ago, but no one will probably know which songs they are. Of course, people who know us know that we played when we were students.
6. Whatโs your view on the role and function of music as political, cultural, spiritual, and/or social vehicles โ and do you try and affront any of these themes in your work, or are you purely interested in music as an expression of technical artistry, personal narrative, and entertainment?
MY NEW GEAR: Of course, I believe that all of these things are important for human survival. The titles and songs of these two debut albums are our current thinking. These are philosophical words: โAs Above, So Belowโ and โAs Without, So Without.โ We are deeply grateful for the events that have taken place on Earth in recent years, as well as the political, cultural, and spiritual developments that you have raised. , I think itโs inherent in social media as well. I didnโt include lyrics cards, but when I listened to it, I realized that some of the songs were quite aggressive. But I guess itโs entertainment.. Because itโs called a parallel universe.
7. Do you feel that your music is giving you back just as much fulfillment as the amount of work you are putting into it or are you expecting something more, or different in the future?
MY NEW GEAR: Exactly! We feel that music is therapy in modern times. When Spotify and Apple Music came out, I really gained mental freedom. Ordinary Twitter users who buy musical instruments by tweeting MY NEW GEAR are also looking for pleasure. We use that pleasure as the driving force behind creating music.
8. Could you describe your creative processes? How do usually start, and go about shaping ideas into a completed song? Do you usually start with a tune, a beat, or a narrative in your head? And do you collaborate with others in this process?
MY NEW GEAR: Some of our members usually work as composers for game companies. However, MY NEW GEARโs creative process is quite different. First of all, Jon completes most of the lyrics and music. Thatโs how the members improve the quality. So Jon begins to tell the story. At the same time, the artwork will be decided by sharing opinions with the members. The album jacket artwork is also important and is influenced by Hypnosis and TOMATO. Music and artwork are always progressing simultaneously.
9. What has been the most difficult thing youโve had to endure in your life or music career so far?
MY NEW GEAR: Thereโs no problem for us. Because I just do what I want to do.
10. On the contrary, what would you consider a successful, proud or significant point in your life or music career so far?
MY NEW GEAR: I can say that every day is a success, but recently someone used our song as a reel on Instagram. Furthermore, I received a DM from someone who saw the reel and said, โCan I sing MY NEW GEARโs song too?Actually, I bought a guitar.โ Please sing it to me, thatโs what I made it for. Thatโs what I said.
11. With social media having a heavy impact on our lives and the music business in general, how do you handle criticism, haters, and/or naysayers in general? Is it something you pay attention to, or simply ignore?
MY NEW GEAR: Because I have a bad personality (lol) We send back Spotify links of songs and funny pictures to our haters. That way, antis become fans from that moment on.
12. Creative work in a studio or home environment, or interaction with a live audience? Which of these two options excites you most, and why?
MY NEW GEAR: Creative work in a studio. Right now I want to make new songs.
13. Do you think is it important for fans of your music to understand the real story and message driving each of your songs, or do you think everyone should be free to interpret your songs in their own personal way?
MY NEW GEAR: Itโs super freedom. We want to increase the number of MY NEW GEAR members around the world. So I think itโs fine if people from different bands and units release songs under our name. I think that would break the playback algorithm and management of spotify.
