Heโs doing his best to keep an old dying sound alive for the greater good of man kind โฆ. He believes that to be given the gift of music is that you must give the music back to the universe to help mankind and raise the vibration of consciousness. Check out the exclusive interview below:
1. Can you tell us a bit about where you come from and how it all got started?
THE MAGIC EPIC: I intended to have a band once Iโd recorded an album and after getting told my songs were epic more than once and my belief real music comes from the magic of the universe I decided that The Magic Epic would be the name that best represented my music.
2. Did you have any formal training or are you self-taught?
THE MAGIC EPIC: A friend of mine showed me the chords for the song patience by guns and roses when I was young, that was the only real lesson I had. He wrote me out the chords and I just never stopped playing after that moment. I picked up bits and pieces from watching people play and listening to lots of guitar based music. I learnt the piano from a chord sheet by playing what Iโd learnt on guitar and by repetition I developed my own style of playing. The singing came with just singing along to everything I could.
3. Who were your first and strongest musical influences and why the name โTHE MAGIC EPICโ?
THE MAGIC EPIC: I would say I am inspired by heartfelt music from decades past more than todays music, I since the introduction of loops that the quality of music has drastically declined as people donโt have to be such good musicians or artists to make a good sound. My influences would have to be people life. Freddie mercury , Jeff Buckley , Marvin Gaye , Elvis Presley , Ryan Adams and bands like oasis , the beatles , happy Mondays , pearl jam , guns n roses and the Lumineers.
4. What do you feel are the key elements in your music that should resonate with listeners, and how would you personally describe your sound?
THE MAGIC EPIC: The key elements to my songs are a strong melody , lyrics that resonate with experiences most people have had, Hope filled songs and musical honesty and that I each song is easy to tell apart from the last. My sound is a mixture of many genres that Iโve been inspired by over the years.
5. Creative work in a studio or home environment, or interaction with a live audience? Which of these two options excites you most, and why?
THE MAGIC EPIC: I love being in the studio and experiencing the whole thing come together like you imagined is euphoric. When I am recording it gives me something that I am able to focus on.
6. Whatโs your view on the role and function of music as political, cultural, spiritual, and/or social vehicles โ and do you try and affront any of these themes in your work, or are you purely interested in music as an expression of technical artistry, personal narrative, and entertainment?
THE MAGIC EPIC: I stay away from politics, I donโt read the papers and barely watch tv as it distracts me from life and personal growth. My music refers to spirituality but often due to my life experiences. My music is basically me connecting with the source and letting it flow through me and what comes out is the feeling of that time and space of when I wrote the song, allowing me to release it and raise my vibration.
7. Do you feel that your music is giving you back just as much fulfillment as the amount of work you are putting into it or are you expecting something more, or different in the future?
THE MAGIC EPIC: Without music Iโd be lost, music gives me purpose and I hope that my music helps people in their own battles in life as it has mine.
8. Could you describe your creative processes? How do usually start, and go about shaping ideas into a completed song? Do you usually start with a tune, a beat, or a narrative in your head? And do you collaborate with others in this process?
THE MAGIC EPIC: It all starts with a feeling, which is the title of the intro track to my first album. I will usually start a new song whilst doodling on the guitar or piano, I use these instruments to release my feelings like meditation I guess and I will hit upon something I think sounds amazing, then I will sing the initial melody once Iโm totally connected to the tune , I then freestyle and words will come to me and then itโs all about playing it over and over till it takes its best and most natural direction. I never work with the best until the song is the song, as I feel that a meaningful song is more about melody than anything else. Once Iโm fairly happy with the ghost version , I go to the studio where I work with my friend and producer Andy Brook and under my direction we put the track together and I always run through different options for the lyrics with Andy until we have the finished piece.
9. What has been the most difficult thing youโve had to endure in your life or music career so far?
THE MAGIC EPIC: Getting my heart broken.
10. On the contrary, what would you consider a successful, proud or significant point in your life or music career so far?
THE MAGIC EPIC: Finishing my first album which took every piece of my heart and soul to do.
