
There’s a distinct sense of evolution pulsing through Energy Whores’ latest single “Fade to Grey”—and it’s structural. With the official addition of producer/DJ Grant (NYC) to the lineup alongside core members Carrie Schoenfeld and Attilio Valenti, the project leans further into a fully collaborative identity. Known for blending electronic textures with rock edges and politically charged undertones, Energy Whores now sharpen their sound into something darker, more immersive, and strikingly cohesive. This 2026 release feels like a pivot point, less scattered experimentation, more controlled descent.
“Fade to Grey” opens with an immediate tension. Hard-hitting, smacking beats land with steady and unrelenting mechanical precision, while a strangely tranquil melody floats above them, almost at odds with the rhythm beneath. That contrast sets the tone early, calm versus chaos, beauty versus decay. Then the voice enters, and it seals the mood. Schoenfeld’s voice is high, slightly grainy, and delivered with a deliberate, almost surgical calm menace. When she opens with “She’s just a shadow behind the door… Her heart was only made of vice,” it feels like a slow reveal.
As the track unfolds, layers of synth begin to weave in, creating a shifting, unstable atmosphere. Nothing quite settles. The production leans into that unease, letting sounds bleed into one another, building a hypnotic disorientation. There’s a cinematic quality here, like watching something unravel in slow motion rather than explode outright.
Midway through, the track deepens rather than peaks. Vocals begin to morph, blending into the instrumentation, becoming less human and more textural. It’s subtle, but effective, blurring the line between voice and machine.
What sticks with “Fade to Grey” is its restraint. It lets thee collapse happen gradually, almost beautifully.
In the end, this is a slow fade you don’t realize you’re caught in until it’s too late.
