Los Angeles-based alt-pop shapeshifter YaSi is back with her new single “feelings.” Born in Denver to Iranian-American roots, YaSi takes heartbreak, dips it in sarcasm, sprinkles glitter on top, and turns it into a certified bop. This track, written during a writing camp in London, plays like a diary entry torn out and tossed in the air like confetti. Produced by Kaleb Waterman (who’s worked with Sam Austins), “feelings” fuses nostalgic synths with punchy alt-pop flair, landing somewhere between Robyn and Remi Wolf on the emotional chaos spectrum.
YaSi with that sugar sweet breathy tender voice, sings breathily and lowly, all which comes off sensual and smug. Her delivery oozes tongue-in-cheek dramatics, as if she’s smirking while mourning. The beat thumps, the soundscape glimmers, and you’re left dancing through your own delusions. The chorus is hooky as hell, like you could loop four times in a row before realizing it. If heartbreak had a sassier little sister, this would be it.
As if “feelings” wasn’t enough of a glittery jab to the heart, the B-side “OLD NEWS!” keeps the mood cheeky and cinematic. You can hear different ranges of YaSi in this song, layered with her harmonies that build and float. The beat slaps, but in a curious way—intriguing, and totally addictive.
Altogether, feelings is a short but sharp showcase of YaSi’s ability to turn vulnerability into power and pain into pop. And as far as emotional middle fingers go, this one’s wearing rhinestones.
