Brooklyn-based duo, The Formalist, comprising Stephen Krieger and Erik Laroi, unveils their sophomore single, “Finite,” an ambient electronic introspection of loss, and memory. Following their recent soothing single, “Happenstance,” “Finite” delves into the fragility of life and the transiency of existence.
The song’s electronic instrumentals create a captivating backdrop with catchy backbeats and sharp synth lines that drive the song like the stinging memories jolting in our minds. From the onset, “Finite” draws us into a sonic landscape that oscillates between melancholy and hope.
Laroi’s soulful vocals serve as a poignant vessel for the song’s themes, delicately weaving through each verse with tender sincerity. The chorus, marked by distorted haze and a drone, emphasizes the plea for connection, with the word “please” echoing as a poignant reminder of the human longing for intimacy and togetherness. The lyrics of “Finite” resonate with introspection and vulnerability with lines like “Give me just another moment to hold your gaze in darkness.”
Krieger’s insight into the musical evolution of “Finite” sheds light on the song’s creative process, highlighting the collaborative effort between the duo. Not surprisingly, it turns out “Finite” gets the most intimate in the album, as Krieger notes. It began during the COVID-19 pandemic to wrap up the collective fear of uncertainty.
Listen to “Finite” and be reminded of the enduring power of human connection amidst life’s fleeting moments.
