Gazing is an eye-opening single that sets itself apart from modern pop music with its jazzy overtones by the Dutch singer, Walker. Gus begins his track Gazing with a breathy, intoned verse over a bubbling synth melody. As the verse proceeds with It’s okay/ Feel no shame/ You are not alone, the electric guitar strings show themselves for the first time in a pop tune.
The first verse sounded like a prayer Gus made to himself and his companion to really be able to be vulnerable and provide empathetic ears, as we understand with the lyrics, “Kill your fear/ I am here without judgment/ I’m all ear, show your tear/ Don’t be reluctant.” Gazing hones a poetic rhythm in its lines, which gives it a more predictable and catchy flair.
With the beginning of the pre-chorus, the music begins to beat harder. You also start hearing an electric guitar and trumpets, which implements a jazzy tone to the overall groovy song.
He alludes to the harmful internet culture in modern times, with cyberspace seeming like a jungle where he’s utterly lost. This is a vital part of the song that makes it highly relatable to the listeners. He further drills into that context with the chorus: Gazing, I am gazing/ But what is my place?/ Everytime I gaze into the sea I am dreaming of peace.
The song ends with an entertaining jazzy play of the trumpets, the drums, the guitar and you perceive a deep and low intoned humming from the back that progressively gets bolder while the instrumentals muzzles.
