Loose Goose have turned frustration into fuel on Going Nowhere Fast, an album that sounds like four musicians finally deciding they have had enough of worrying about where they are supposed to be going. The Gold Coast alt-rock four-piece, Ryan Barwick, Max Humphrey, Wil Wood and Greg Pheasant, originally entered the studio intending to record four songs. Instead, they emerged with nine, and that excess feels appropriate for a record wrestling with burnout, loneliness, breakups, ageing and the exhausting chase for recognition.
“Achilles Heel” opens the album with marching drums and splashing cymbals, immediately creating the sensation of something charging toward a confrontation. Barwick sings with reckless abandon, his shimmering melodies cutting through the rhythmic stomp as the song takes aim at the pressures of the music industry.
That emotional volatility becomes more intimate on “See You (Every Night).” Moody, introspective guitars replace some of the opener’s aggression, leaving more room for the ache underneath. The singer reflects on everything he sacrifices and the lengths he goes to simply to see someone every night, turning the album’s broader themes of exhaustion into something painfully personal. It is the kind of track where distance is measured not in kilometres but in what someone is willing to give up.
Then Going Nowhere Fast throws the doors open with “Bolivian Boogie Sugar.” This is rock music going completely off the rails. The drums go all out, guitars spark and snarl, and the vocal races forward as though the singer really is running from the police. After all the album’s anxiety and introspection, the closer chooses chaos over resolution—and honestly, why not?
Recorded at Brooklet Studios with producer Cameron Lockwood, the album pushes Loose Goose beyond their surf-rock beginnings toward a heavier alternative sound. Yet the result never loses its sense of fun. Going Nowhere Fast understands that sometimes the healthiest response to feeling stuck is to turn the volume up, embrace the mess, and dance in it.
