GONE ISLAND is no average reggae EP. Released on March 15th, it is what the Baltimore/Washington project GURLIK calls “altered reggae.” This kind of reggae gives you an all-in-one offer, binding the predominant with jazz, rock, classical, and more. Produced by Joe LoCascio and Robert Gurlik, the EP showcases the eclectic vision of writer Phil Gurlik with the help of guitarist Mike Sunjka.
The title track, “Gone Island,” sets a lively and uplifting tone for GONE ISLAND, placing you in the middle of a tropical paradise with its intriguing fusion of classical and reggae influences. Starting with a classical progression, the song seamlessly transitions into catchy reggae melodies, accompanied by rustling drums and chiming electric guitar.
“This Island” continues the EP’s lighthearted and relaxing mood, with its soulful melodies and soothing rhythms. Meanwhile “Ragged Island” captivates with its atmospheric and slow groove. The guitar riffing in reverb is an absolute sender that prods you to imagine soothing starry nights on the island. Then we have horns in the dancey “Wrong Turn” to jazz up the music with a majestic aura.
GONE ISLAND concludes with an extended version of “Gone Island,” which prolongs the theatrical orchestral arrangement. It swells before giving way to the catchy reggae melodies once again and the pronounced guitar bends catch your attention.
Listen to GONE ISLAND by GURLIK if you love reggae and want to see the genre expand and meld into others in vivid styling.
